This project is an alteration and addition to a 1970s walk-up home in Bonnells Bay. The brief is for new outdoor living spaces at both the front and rear of the existing house, renewal of the existing access stair, and new kitchen and laundry with direct access to the backyard. The design rearranges the existing internal spaces to open up to the two new decks. One at the front of the house and another at the back. The new front deck and access stair span the street facade of the house, while new timber sliding doors replace the existing windows to provide access from the existing living room out to the deck area.
At the back, new kitchen and laundry area are arranged to open the house up to a new covered back deck and backyard. The new rear deck provides sheltered outdoor living space and a transition zone between the house and the backyard. The roof structure, designed to reduce the amount of overshadowing to the garden is cantilevered over the existing house roof and the new raised planter bed.
